The Brother gave him leave to return to the mainland, but a voice within him tells him that he is not going to leave British Columbia alive.

Nettles is terrified.

He can’t bring himself to return to his cabin with last night’s horrible vision fresh in his mind, the spectre with the wide-open mouth and the rotten emptiness inside—what demons will visit him next?

He knows that the Brother, fraudulent though he may be in his finances, can strike without being physically present—as the three dissidents experienced while approaching the House of Mystery.

Other disciples gave similar testimony to the Brother’s strange powers. Barney Sullivan saw him walking with a man he didn’t recognize, whom he later knew as Henney Krause, one of the Brother’s henchmen. Suspecting the figure to be a Dark Adept, he began to follow the pair.

“One step and I was suddenly stricken,” Sullivan told Nettles. “It was as if I’d been hit on the head. I couldn’t move or think. My head felt the size of a balloon.”

As described in The Aquarian Gospel, Dark Adepts can go everywhere; they can taint food and drink, and even enter the human body, causing mental illness, epilepsy, plagues, stillbirths and the giving over of a human to the Brothers of the Dark, the guardians of the Abyss.

Then his mind goes back to the hard-bitten lawyer, the Canadian from Vancouver, the most skeptical of the three dissidents; the one who isn’t buying any of it and seems not to give a tinker’s damn about Dark Adepts.

Nettles heads for Elliot Linden’s house at once.
